Synthetic fuels – energy source of the future

Study confirms: liquid renewable fuels are vital for an energy supply that is largely greenhouse gas-neutral.

Hemmingstedt – The results of the ‘Status und Perspektiven flüssiger Energieträger in der Energiewende’ (Status and prospects of liquid energy sources for the energy revolution) study were also presented for the first time for the northern German region yesterday evening in Hamburg. Jürgen Wollschläger, managing director of Raffinerie Heide GmbH, was involved in a subsequent expert discussion. The study conducted by Prognos AG demonstrates that liquid renewable, or synthetic, fuels will be vital in the future to ensure an energy supply that is predominantly greenhouse gas-neutral, as laid out by the Paris Agreement of 2015. Raffinerie Heide GmbH is already active in this field, the production of liquid, renewable sources of energy using electricity, known as ‘power-to-liquid’.

In summer 2018, for example, the Hemmingstedt-based company, together with five other partners from industry and science and under the direction of the University of Bremen, commenced work on the KEROSyN100 research project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The aim of the project is to develop and produce environmentally friendly, synthetic kerosene using wind energy. ‘Synthetic fuels are the future. The location of our refinery offers a significant benefit for the production of these new fuels. We have the wind energy, and thus the necessary power, directly on our doorstep. To set the course for tomorrow, today, we are providing our expertise and opportunities to support the research and implementation of these renewable fuels,’ says Jürgen Wollschläger, managing director of Raffinerie Heide.
